Blending CG 3D and 2D drawn animation techniques, Meanwhile follows four characters traversing a city, each lost in their own separate worlds, trapped in their memories, regrets and frustrations. Meanwhile uses bold colour schemes and fragments of narratives to examine empathy in urban insularity.

Braids – Bunny Rose

A video I directed for Braids is out!

"We take a contemplative journey through London in this ethereal and enigmatic video for ‘Bunny Rose’ by Canadian band Braids.
Over the course of a long and lonely night in the city, and in her fragile state, a spirit pulls herself together - from dust and cobwebs, tears and dew - to finally become whole as dawn breaks."

With some lovely delicate 2D animation by Diana Gradinaru

Character development bits

Forgot trailer

A quick trailer for my Royal College of Art Animation MA first year film, Forgot.

Youth Lagoon – Raspberry Cane

Jaysus.

More bits from the animation I'm working on at the moment at the RCA.

Whisper

Finally, something moving.

Why go Bald

A quick style frame from the animated short I'm working on at the moment at the RCA. Seems to be heading in roughly the direction I want it to.

Brainbelt JDIFF 2013

Blancanieves

I'm taking part in a Brainbelt exhibition in Dublin again, running at the moment in Filmbase on Curved Street. My poster is for Blancanieves, a Spanish silence black and white take on Snow White.

Brainbelt Illustration Collective have teamed up with this year’s Jameson Dublin International Film Festival to bring you a diverse range of exciting illustrations of movie posters, classic lines and movie icons.

All inspired from a hand picked selection of films from this year's festival line-up. Keep your eyes peeled, as they will be dotted around a variety of participating cinema lobbies, box offices and bars.

Pieces are limited edition prints from contributing illustrators:
Emma Rowe
Stephen McNally
Alan Dunne
Ultan Courtney
Michelle Cunningham
Gareth Teggin
Jamie Murphy
John Corrigan
Peter Dawson

See the entire collection at JDIFF HQ, Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar!

Faces blending

Faces blending Flash test from Stephen McNally on Vimeo.
A quick test of a technique for my first year film at the RCA. Luiz suggested it might work well as a loop, so I threw in some extra frames on the end.

Disembodying Voice

Disembodying Voice from Stephen McNally on Vimeo. The results of a quick workshop at the Royal College of Art. It's a bit all over the place, trying to blend CG and 2D techniques, with smears and dry brush effects for motion blur, etc.

Saturn Santa

Happy Saturnalia!

Continuing last year's pagan themed Christmas (Odin), this year I'm looking at Saturn / Cronos, the Titan from whom we have received this holiday. Based on the Goya painting:

And I was testing out some photoshop animation / animated GIF stuff.

Brainbelt 2012

Here's a piece from this year's Brainbelt exhibition running in Filmbase as part of Design Week this week.

Lone Fashionista #5

The return of Miami Vice.

Lone Fashionista #4

Hmm.

Lone Fashionista #3

The Urban Bohemian
More playing about with the same colour palette.

Lone Fashionista #2

Pink fringe? Why not?
Keeping to a similar palette as yesterday's.
Still trying to ease back into this drawing malarkey.

Lone Fashionista #1

It's been ages since I last drew and I'm thoroughly rusty.

Loki: work in progress fragments

Various fragments and bits of tests for an animation I'm working on. Nothing's finished and it's all a bit rough around the edges. I took a break for February, but I'm intending to start back in to it for March.
